Coe Values:

  • Sustainable and regenerative rangeland management
  • Social justice and human rights
  • Climate change adaptation and resilience
  • Respect for traditional cultural practices & values
  • Education and awareness
  • Networking and collaboration

A registered pastoral and agro-pastoral led NGO to strengthen the Voices of pastoralists in addressing their rights, concerns and needs for effective feedback mechanism and better understanding. Pastoralist themselves are adaptable and resilient communities and they feel that others take advantage of the intricate knowledge of their environment, the strong sense of identity and cultural heritage to manipulate their concerns during policy making process. Our organization focuses on resource use, disaster risk reduction, gender equality, food & nutrition security in rangeland counties namely Baringo, Elgeyo-marakwet, Samburu, Laikipia and Turkana Counties in Kenya.

Pastoralist are worried of risks and challenges that impact their livelihoods and way of life. This includes loss of pasture lands,  land tenure insecurity, access to water resources, livestock diseases, market access and price fluctuations as well as conflict insecurity. Moreover, a number of pastoralists are within dry and arid rangelands areas of Kenya where invasive weeds such as prosopis species have totally colonized their pasturelands depleting grazing lands. Apart from invasive species, pastoralists often experience conflicts over resources, land and grazing rights with neighboring communities, developers and state-imposed restrictions on livestock migration. These conflicts can trigger displacements, banditry, loss of livelihoods and even violence destabilizing pastoral communities.

Weak advocacy platforms, inefficient coordination between pastoralists and their advocating agencies to express their needs and concerns are some of issues affecting sustainable livestock and rangelands management.

To address these risks, our organization shall foster inclusive policies, improve access water and pasturelands, land tenure security and promote climate change strategies among pastoralist communities.
